XD; And uh, incorrect underwear color. o_o; Status: Retired
Inspiration and Etc.: Having never made my own red Mai after wearing the one I commissioned and making three different colors, I decided it was time to have a basic red KOF style Mai for once. XD And one not made out of satin, no less~ I'm just sad that I don't like nearly ANY of the photos of me in it, so I just tried to find some good ones to put up here. T_T
Construction / Costume Notes: Hotglued as usual in those days... n.n; I decided to make this right before I went to Otakon 2003, as one of my costumes totally fell apart right before I was going to leave and I wanted a quick replacement. Answer = Mai! I learned how to do new stuff on this one, like making the collar stick up around my neck like it should. The only problem was that I did the last bit of it AT the con in my hotel room, so I put the tails on the wrong sides. I fixed this when I wore it again at PMX the following year. ^^; Eh, and after the problems the previous year with Mai at AX, I knew I didn't want to be wearing little footwear sockthings on the much-concrete at Otakon. I made these little wannabe bootcovers that I was really proud of at the time, and allowed me to walk comfortably around the Baltimore Convention Center. ^^v! The costume no longer exists, but I'd really like to make a new, more accurate KOF Mai someday anyway. It's like, my mission to finally make a really nice one for myself. After the Real Bout FF Mai I made, I have the confidence that I'm learning more and can make that more of a reality someday. :9

Character Background: Though she is very well known in The King of Fighters series, Mai's first appearance and series was Fatal Fury. She first showed up in Fatal Fury 2 and has been in just about every Fatal Fury game since then. The design of this outfit was used in The King of Fighters starting with '96, when most of the sprites were revamped. Her outfit in '94 and '95 was slightly different and based more on her look in her original game series. She appeared in the newer KOF design in every other appearance since then, including the Capcom vs SNK crossover games and specials like Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. This amuses me somewhat, as her Fatal Fury designs are all but forgotten these days!
